What happens to memory as we age?

As we grow older, we can become a little more forgetful. Most of this forgetfulness is due to normal age related forgetfulness, a lack of attention, multitasking, fatigue and stress. However when the forgetfulness increases in frequency and it’s effecting a person’s daily living, it is worth making an appointment with a GP.

In dementia, short term memory is the first to be affected by the course of the disease and these changes are often first apparent in the hippocampus which plays a huge role in learning and memory. Overtime long term memories can also be affected but these are generally preserved for much longer in the disease trajectory.
