Risk factors in midlife- Hypertension

Hypertension

Continuos hypertension in midlife is associated with increased risk of a late life dementia (Livingstone et al., 2020). In one study, blood pressure higher than 140mm Hg in midlife in a study group with a mean age of 55 years old was associated with an increased risk of developing dementia over the 18 year follow up (Mc Grath et al., 2017).

Ireland has one of the highest rates of hypertension globally but has very poor levels of both diagnosis and treatment NCD-RisC, 2017) . It’s important to know your health numbers, get your blood pressure checked with your GP. The aim is for less than 130mm Hg in midlife (Livingstone et al., 2020).
