Nine potentially modifiable risk factors were identified by the Lancet Commission in 2017
Their most recent report, published in 2020 added three more risk factors for dementia with newer and convincing evidence (Livingston et al., 2020)
Together these 12 modifiable risk factors account for around 40% of dementias around the world, which could, in theory be prevented or delayed (Livingston et al., 2020).
