Risk factors in later life- Smoking

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable deaths in Ireland with smoking related deaths are mainly due to cancers, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) and heart disease (HSE).

Smokers are at higher risk of developing dementia than non- smokers (Livingstone et al., 2017), but stopping smoking- even at an older age can reduce the risk (Livingstone et al., 2020). In one huge study of a group of 50,000 men over 60 who stopped smoking for more than four years, researchers found that it reduced their risk of developing dementia over the next eight years (Choi et al., 2018).
