There is no cure for dementia and no disease modifying treatment is available. There are hugh projected increases in the future and the impact of dementia is very real.
Until science finds a cure, attention has focused on what can be done to reduce the risk of developing dementia. Studying dementia risk is challenging because the pathology develops over decades and because it takes so long to develop, it makes it difficult to conduct research for some of the identified risk factors. Take smoking for example, researchers cannot ask people in a randomised control trial to smoke to see if it causes dementia. This would be highly unethical and almost unreasonable .
