An introduction to Person Centred Care

Working with the person’s family

It is important that as professional caregivers you acknowledge the important role relatives have played and continue to play in the lives of the residents that you care for. Once upon a time they may have been the person’s only caregiver, their job was 24/7- they are experts too.

While their relatives are in your care, they may feel enormous guilt and sadness-  remember relatives still care from a distance.

When can conflict arise?

You may be very enthusiastic about starting a lifestory book with your resident but does their family feel the same? Are they afraid their relative will divulge some family secrets, have you explained to them the purpose behind lifestory work?

You both might be thinking of communicating with each other, but too much time thinking and you’ll never get it done.

Good communication is a key piece of the jigsaw!
