•Prevalence: Approximately 60% of all dementia diagnosed. This is overwhelmingly the most common form of dementia diagnosed.
Thought to be caused by the abnormal build-up of proteins (amyloid and Tau) in and around brain cells. Plaques build up in the spaces between the nerve cells. Tangles build up inside the cell. These build ups reduce the cells ability to interact with one another and as such the cells begin to die.
Below, is a representation of how Alzheimer’s can effect the brain. The part of the brain impacted by Alzheimer’s can differ from person to person however areas such as the hippocampus are commonly affected. The hippocampus plays a vital role in memory and learning.
